Blake and his younger siblings were removed from their home because of their father’s severe abuse. Blake went to live with a cousin who was a school teacher. He thrived there. His mother did begin making progress on her commitments, but Blake wanted to stay where he was.
Blake’s Guardian ad Litem, Sandra, helped him share his feelings with the judge. With her support, Blake was able to write a powerful letter to the judge about why he wanted to stay with his cousin. The Judge brought Sandra and Blake into his chambers and read the letter. He did award guardianship to Blake’s cousin. Sandra, continued helping Blake when she helped his mother understand the situation. Sandra then focused on the younger siblings and their needs. They were able to go home later that year. As a Guardian ad Litem, Sandra was able to advocate for the unique needs of each child.
