Shirley Hart Berry has been a Guardian ad Litem for a decade, helping more than 40 children who had been abused or neglected and come into the custody of the Department of Social Services.
Ms. Berry, who served as chair of the English Department at Cape Fear Community College, became a Guardian in 2003, the year she retired. She has specialized in working with teens who make up over 25% of the children in custody in New Hanover County.
Her teaching background notwithstanding, her greatest assets as a Guardian ad Litem were her tenacity and her common sense.
Today she is a trusted advisor and resource to the Guardian program.
